Tool 13 – Writing a letter to yourself Letting learners write a future letter to themselves is a fun exercise that lets them reflect on their current situation as well as set goals for the future. It’s a simple exercise but needs enough time for brainstorming and reflection to get the most out of it. Sometimes learners will be uncertain about what to write, so before the writing starts it is best if the facilitator takes a few minutes of time with the group, brainstorming and reflecting on the different things they could say in the letter. After that the aim is that learners write a handwritten letter to themselves describing the situation that they’re currently in, what they’ve learned during the Mentoring Circles and what they have decided to do to reach their goals in the next few weeks and months. Let them question themselves on what actions they want to do or which habits they want to stop doing and what they’ve done about. They can decide the length of the letter themselves but should aim for at least 1 A4 page. After they finish the letter, the learners put it into an envelope, seal it and put their home address on the envelope. Then they hand it over to the facilitator who will post the letter 3 months after the end of the last Circle session. This will allow the learners to refresh the most important aspects they gained from the Circle sessions and reflect on the progress they have made to reach their goals since the end of it. Materials needed: - Good pens for participants; - Stack of A4-sheets of paper (lined); - Envelope.
